Bettermind Psychotherapy
Therapy offers a place to pause, reflect, and explore the complexity of your inner world. My work is grounded in respect for each person’s capacity for insight, growth, and change.
Clients often describe me as empathetic, professional, and direct — qualities that allow for both depth and clarity in the therapeutic process.
Clinical and Professional Experience
With over 20 years of practice and more than 15,000 sessions delivered, I have worked with adults, adolescents, and couples through a wide range of difficulties — including anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, grief, and experiences of self-harm or suicidal thoughts.

Emma Kate Barnett
My approach is both compassionate and clinically attentive, helping clients not only in times of acute struggle but also in exploring the deeper patterns and contexts that shape their lives.
Alongside this work with individuals and couples, I have supported leaders and professionals across a wide range of organisational settings, including healthcare, law, education, and management. This has given me insight into the unique pressures faced by those carrying significant responsibility — from navigating organisational conflict to the personal impact of high-stakes decision-making.
In addition, I spent more than a decade providing therapy within the commercial construction sector — supporting both the professionals who drive and oversee projects, including engineers, managers, and project leaders, and the tradespeople and their families who bring those projects to life. This work gave me a deep appreciation for the breadth of pressures across the industry, from the responsibility of leadership to the challenges of life on site.
Together, these experiences inform a practice that is clinically deep and attuned to the realities of living and working in complex environments.
Therapeutic Orientation
I work primarily from a psychodynamic perspective, with a strong grounding in Object Relations Theory. This orientation emphasises the importance of relational patterns, both past and present, and the ways these shape our internal world. Exploring these dynamics creates opportunities not only for greater self-understanding, but also for new ways of relating, working, and living. Where helpful, I draw from other therapeutic approaches to meet the unique needs of each client.
Professional Development
Building on more than twenty years of clinical experience and education, I continue to deepen and refine my work through advanced postgraduate-level training in psychoanalytic orientations, including Object Relations and contemporary relational approaches. I have completed a two-year advanced programme in Object Relations Theory and Practice and am currently undertaking the Clinical Track Programme, both based in the United States and designed for experienced clinicians. This sustained commitment to ongoing professional formation ensures that my practice remains rigorous, reflective, and responsive to contemporary developments in psychodynamic and psychoanalytic thought.
Broader Work
Beyond individual therapy, my work has included:
- Delivering psychological first aid after workplace injuries and fatalities
- Conducting research into group art therapy for young people at risk
- Facilitating group therapy programmes
These experiences have strengthened my capacity to respond with empathy and clarity in moments of acute vulnerability and complexity.
